‘I want to match Ferguson’s record at Man. United’ – Jose Mourinho

While the 53-year-old was in relaxed mood at his official unveiling, he couldn’t resist having a dig at Arsenal manager and long-time rival Arsene Wenger, who last won the title in 2004, when asked if he felt any pressure following his premature exit at Chelsea.

He is a chequebook manager, he buys titles, he never has a long-term vision, he ignores the young players he inherits as he flits from club to club.

“About Ryan, let me finish – I never run away about my responsibility”. It is not my fault. The job Ryan wanted was the manager’s job and the club decided that was the job for me.

“I knew the question about youth players would come in”.

Sir Alex Ferguson thinks Ryan Giggs made the right decision in choosing to leave Manchester United. Ryan made his decision. But he made his decision, a decision where he needed to be courageous. “If one day the club wants him to be manager it will be the outcome of his achievements as a manager”.

Mourinho also insisted that managing United was not his “dream job” but a reality.

As to what style of football United would play, Mourinho twice referenced the word “aggressive” in one answer. It is normal that a player at his age will change a little bit. But one thing that will never change is the appetite to put the ball in the net.

“I was always much more aggressive in my approach, with the risks that obviously can bring”.

“So I think they can be an wonderful complement for each other with their qualities”.

Mourinho, who left Chelsea under a cloud for a second time last term months after winning the title, said Giggs could not have stayed after he didn’t get the top job.

“I will never be able to work without success – that is my nature”.

The new United manager added: “I think it is a job everyone wants and not many have a chance to have and I have it”. “I am going to focus on our job and our club”.

For United fans success was routine, I want the players to forget the last few years. I don’t want the players to start by thinking we have to do better.

Mourinho takes over a United side who have not challenged for the Premier League title since they triumphed under Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013, with a highest finish of fourth since then.

“It’s the biggest club he’s ever played for and the most hard competition he’s ever played for”, he said.

He believes he needs one more signing to make United effective again. “I have the same respect for every manager”.
