Southgate not interested in England job

Roy Hodgson faced the music on Tuesday for England’s shock loss to Iceland at the European Championship, reluctantly appearing at a news conference to show that he wasn’t afraid of the wave of criticism directed at the now ex-manager of England and the team.

Glenn hopes to have appointed a successor by the start of England’s 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign in early September, but said that if not, “we have an interim plan in mind”.

“We are not talking about names but it would be a pretty obvious one to pick”.

Glenn added, “It’s such an important decision”. Kane is the best striker of the ball we have. Otherwise you might get a few interim solutions – a few managers to come and help.

Glenn’s words will also do little to quell speculation that the FA would be keen to appoint Arsene Wenger – the veteran tactician, who will enter the final year of his current deal at Arsenal this forthcoming season. “I think he will be part of the process of saying, ‘What do you think?'”

“In response to recent media reports, I’d like to say that is completely untrue”, he said.

Dyke, the former BBC director general who was speaking after the launch of a report into the future of broadcasting in central London, made a TV documentary for Channel 4 20 years ago about the pressures on the England manager.

The panel are set to meet later this week to outline the criteria for the next manager, but the search will not be restricted to a domestic candidate, with Glenn admitting that there is no “perfect” English candidate now available. Rooney says there was no player revolt, but a mutiny does explain why such a clueless calamity occurred, in which the whole side was thoroughly thrashed by a minnow side boasting just a fraction of the talent that they possess.

“You have to make trade-offs”. You have to bounce back, that is your job, but each player is different, some might take longer.

“I believe we ended up with the best candidate, someone who’s extremely credible, who had taken Switzerland to third in the world, who had global experience therefore, and who had a good club record”, he said. I don’t think that’s a matter for the public.

“But clearly I think you want them to be an inspirational manager who is sophisticated enough to harness all the modern techniques that you can do to build resilience in tournaments and overall success”. It would be very hypocritical of me to do so having been coach of Switzerland, Finland and the United Arab Emirates.

“I don’t have a problem with it”, he said when asked about a foreign successor.
