Angels’ bats quieted by O’Sullivan after big night in loss

The Red Sox were on the end of a drubbing from the Los Angeles Angels at Fenway Park, as the California club ended their slump in emphatic fashion as they hit Boston for over 20.

The Red Sox’ bats were fairly dormant until the fifth inning when they exploded for seven runs, driving Shoemaker from the game.

After falling into a 7-0, the Angels did threaten with three runs in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh, coming on Yunel Escobar’s two-run double against reliever Junichi Tazawa.

“Matt is on an incredible run”, manager Mike Scioscia said after his pitcher’s last outing. He exited Saturday’s contest after 4.1 innings, having surrendered six runs, three of which were earned.

Then, Cron continued his career night in the top of the fourth inning, smashing a solo home run to left field.

“I think that ball was going to come back in play and obviously Trout is probably going to score on that ball”, Betts said.

There were one-run wins for the San Diego Padres (2-1 over the New York Yankees), New York Mets (4-3 over the Chicago Cubs), Detroit Tigers (3-2 over the Tampa Bay Rays) and Chicago White Sox (7-6 over the Houston Astros).

Shoemaker has been brilliant in two career games, one start, against the Red Sox, going 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 10 2/3 innings against Boston. While the Red Sox did capture the series opener on Friday night, Farrell was criticized for not lifting starter Steven Wright after it started to rain. They are the first set of teammates with at least five hits and five RBIs in the same game since Gene Moore and Buck Jordan for the Boston Braves in 1936, according to ESPN.

O’Sullivan, out of options, was designated for assignment by the Red Sox on May 16, but he returned to Pawtucket after clearing waivers. Escobar had four hits and two RBIs for the Angels, who have lost 11 of 13. Third baseman Travis Shaw’s 11th error (of the team’s 42) of the season led to an unearned run in the second, Cron reaching on an infield hit thrown away by Shaw.

Johnny Giavotella singled to re-load the bases before Perez cleared them with a double off the center-field wall.

Hanley Ramirez and Sandy Leon hit two-run doubles as Boston scored its seven in the fifth. The advantage then grew to 3-0 in the second inning as shortstop Andrelton Simmons scored a singling Cron with an RBI sacrifice fly. The inning put Los Angeles ahead 20-1. The manager also said that RHP Joe Kelly (demoted to the minors last month) threw a 40-pitch session Saturday as he works to come back from a groin injury. The Red Sox did, after all, take two of three against the Angels, right? He batted leadoff and went 1 for 4 before being lifted for a pinch runner. RHP Matt Shoemaker, winless in June despite a 2.14 ERA, faces Red Sox call-up RH Sean O’Sullivan in Sunday’s series finale.
