Manchester United stand in the way of Liverpool selling Mario Balotelli

Lazio have registered their interest in signing Mario Balotelli, initially on a season-long loan.

The Italian worldwide scored only one Premier League goal for the Reds last season after his transfer from AC Milan, and has been linked with a move away from the club.

Liverpool might finally be able to offload Mario Balotelli this summer, with Lazio reportedly willing to take the lacklustre Italian striker if they can successfully qualify for the group stages of this season’s Champions League, although Manchester United could also have a surprising role to play.

According to The Mirror’s report, Lazio are prepared to offer the Reds a £1.5m loan fee with a view to make the deal permanent for £12.5m.

Meanwhile, TalkSport indicated that Serie A SS Lazio is set to bid for Balotelli, but only on loan and “if they don’t have to pay all his wages”.

There is a twist in the tale, though.

It is not an ideal scenario for Liverpool and manager Brendan Rodgers, but it looks to be about the best deal they could hope for in their efforts to get rid of the underperforming Balotelli.

It is not immediately known if Rogers is okay with this kind of offer as I Biancocelesti is asking Liverpool to split with them Balotelli’s £100,000 weekly salary.

Rodgers described the purchase of the former Manchester City forward as a “calculated gamble” last summer, per the Liverpool Echo’s James Pearce.
