Resurgence 20 years on, Resurgence is in theaters and finally following up the hit film.

Variety reports that Roland Emmerich’s film will take in a solid $102.1 million from 21,872 screens across 57 global markets by the end of the weekend.

Walt Disney Co.’s “Finding Dory” placed first at the box office for a second weekend, beating the modest opening for “Independence Day: Resurgence”, a big summer release from Twentieth Century Fox. That puts it on track to crack the top ten domestic animated movie earners list, but it has a long way to go to catch Toy Story 3, the highest grossing Pixar film ($415 million, 2010) or Shrek 2, the highest ever grossing animated movie ($441 million, 2004). The Shallows is coming in with $16.7 million, which almost matches its budget, causing the shark vs. surfer thriller to land in fourth place behind Central Intelligence, which made $18.4 million in its second weekend for a combined box office of a little over $69 million. In the meantime, the worldwide haul for Central Intelligence does seem likely to be profitable, as the well-regarded comedy brought in an estimated $18.4 million for its second week.

Also new this weekend in America are: The Shallows at number 4 and Free State of Jones at number 5.

Finding Nemo also broke records for the best second weekend for an animated title. The original “Independence Day” grossed $306 million domestically with $511 million internationally, so there’s a bit of a legacy to which it has to live up. Meanwhile, the newly released The Neon Demon opened outside of the top 10 with an estimated $606,594.
