The risk of a fuel leak has prompted Toyota New Zealand to recall almost 37,000 new and used imported Toyota and Lexus vehicles.

The recalls over the airbag issue will total 4,981 units, 1,413 of which are the Prius models and 3,568 the Lexus CT200h, the distributor said. The impacted models were from the 2006 to 2015.

Toyota and Lexus owners can find out whether their vehicles are subject to this or any other recall by visiting Toyota.com/recall and running a search using their vehicle’s Vehicle Identification Number.

Toyota adds that its review has so far shown no evidence of any injuries resulting from either of the two faults.

Just under half of these vehicles (34,135) could also have a small crack in inflators in the air bags in the driver and passenger sides which may expand, causing the air bags to partially inflate.

Toyota reaffirmed that the recall of the faulty airbag inflators in this case were not manufactured by Takata Corp., and also mentioned that around 9,48,000 vehicles will be recalled from across the globe. Toyota said North American models affected by the air bag recall are the 2010 to 2012 Prius hybrid, the 2010 and 2012 Prius plug-in and the 2011 to 2012 Lexus CT 200h. That followed an announcement late on Tuesday that 1.43m cars needed repairs over a separate issue involving air bag inflators.

The air bag manufacturer, Autoliv, based in Stockholm, Sweden, said it is co-operating fully with the recall.

The curtain shield airbags in question were not made by embattled Japanese supplier Takata, the vehicle maker said.
