Contestant Sandy Docherty, 49, who lives in Yeadon, has admitted being “slightly in awe” when meeting presenters Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood.

“I’m from the North West and that’s where my sense of humour comes from”, adds the Wallasey-born foodie.

“I have written three cookbooks, two of them have been published in America”. But I wouldn’t try to make them myself – that’s the danger zone for me. It promises “a treasure trove of inspirational ideas to bring a spark of creativity and a teaspoon of wonder into your kitchen”.

Much as he loves having “a giggle” in “innuendo city” with Berry and pun-loving hosts Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins, Hollywood has enjoyed having the chance to leave the Bake Off tent and “do something different” recently. “And everything is challenging in its own way”. Her passion for baking had first been stirred by the realisation that retirement wasn’t everything she thought it would be. Flora was another memorable contestant, primarily as she was the youngest member of the group by a decade and therefore reminded me of last year’s teenage baker Martha.

P: They way that they do the technical challenge – if you’ve got eight people doing it and someone doesn’t have a clue about where to start, they wait for someone to start and everyone will take the lead from that person. I was bored and so I made a decision to bake. “She did say she’d go on the back of one of them, so maybe that’s one for the future…”

I wasn’t particularly good at school as I never bothered revising and didn’t concentrate as much as I should have.

For Mr Byrne it was all about interpretation and his encouragement made me stick with it. He was pleased when I said I was going to art school.

P: I always think it’s awesome. “He’s actually really lovely and when I got through to the final and was really nervous he was very supportive”. She thinks her style and description of herself are unanimous, saying “it might not be glamorous but it’s tasty”. When I first arrived I was put in the CSE classes, but after a term he moved me up to O-level. “They mustn’t forget that it’s all about the bakers and getting to know them”. That pair are two tough cookies to impress.

The company said several customers came in and asked to place the highest amount possible on one contestant which raised suspicion.
