The probable cause statement unsealed Wednesday sheds new light into the arrest of Mahin Kahn, 18, of Tucson, Friday after an FBI joint terrorism task force investigation.
That document said Khan discussed other potential targets, including an Air Force recruitment center in Tucson, and said that he had reached out to a member of a known foreign terrorist organization asking how to build a pressure-cooker bomb.
Mahin Khan, 18, was arrested on suspicion of conspiring to commit acts of terrorism against government buildings in Maricopa and Pima counties.
According to the documents, during a phone call on April 16, Khan asked an unnamed person if he/she had been to Mission Bay area.
In other emails he asked for “cookie recipes” which the Federal Bureau of Investigation interpreted to likely mean instructions for an improvised explosive device, and referred to “pressure cookie” which likely meant a pressure-cooker bomb, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said in the statement.
He also allegedly wrote that he needs, “AK (likely referring to AK 47 weapon) and pistols can u do that wanna take out marines and jews”.
Little information exists about Khan’s past.
He was booked into the Fourth Avenue Jail on one count of conspiracy to commit terrorism and one terrorism charge. Catalina Foothills School District spokeswoman Julie Farbarik said he attended a high school there for a few days in August 2013. Records show his family has lived in Tucson for several years and his father has a medical license. She said Khan had behavior issues and that his parents withdrew him to avoid disciplinary action.
