Remember when Blackberry was the it device to have for the young tech-savvy individual?
In the meantime, staffers are still allowed to order the following BlackBerry devices: the Classic, the Passport, the Z30, the Z10, and the Q10.
Staffers will be given a new choice of the Apple iPhone SE or Samsung Galaxy S6.
According to commentators, this was a significant moment in BlackBerry’s history.
While BlackBerry is reportedly planning to release three new Android phones in the coming year – two with full touch screens and one with the iconic QWERTY keyboard – the company has indeed begun to shift its focus from smartphones to software used by companies and governments to manage their mobile devices. The report notes that this is an end of an era for BlackBerry, which long held US Government contracts.
It’s unlikely that BlackBerry’s news will change Capitol Hill’s push toward Android and iOS devices.
This does not imply that the devices would be pulled out of the retail markets. the Q 10 and other such devices by the manufacturer will continue to be sold off, possibly to make good use of the unsold stock piling up at its warehouses. BlackBerry Chief Executive John Chen last month expressed confidence the company’s trimmed-down handset business can turn a profit by a self-imposed September deadline.
Update: BlackBerry India has issued the following statement: “BlackBerry’s device strategy is based on a cross-platform model where we’ll continue to support our BlackBerry 10 platform while expanding our device offering to include Android-based devices”. And, we are updating our smartphone lineup with state of the art devices.
