QB Stidham transferring from Baylor instead of being backup

A number of players have either de-committed or chose to transfer from Baylor ever since Art Briles was sacked amidst a number sexual assault allegations against the school.

As a true freshman, Stidham threw for 1,265 yards and 12 touchdowns with only two interceptions in 10 games.

Stidham was ranked as the nation’s No. 2 dual-threat quarterback coming out of Stephenville (Texas) High School, and was rated as the country’s No. 38 overall player.

Baylor’s 2017 recruiting class disappeared almost overnight. Running back Kameron Martin signed with Auburn, cornerback Parrish Cobb signed with Oklahoma and late release Brandon Bowen, a defensive end, signed with TCU.

New Baylor coach Jim Grobe told Waco’s ESPN Radio affiliate that Stidham also “wanted to be THE guy” next season under center, not Russell, who in October had season-ending neck surgery. Russell announced last month he had been fully cleared for football activities.

Stidham suffered a hand injury and Johnson suffered a head injury against Texas, leaving Baylor to run its offense with receiver Lynx Hawthorne in a close loss to Texas in the regular season finale.

Without Stidham, the Bears will have only two scholarship quarterbacks on the roster: Russell and freshman Zach Smith.

Where Stidham will go next is unclear, though it’s possible he could enroll at a junior college for the fall semester. He is expected to transfer to McLennan Community College and can transfer to any school of his choosing in 2017 with three remaining years of eligibility.

Just when you didn’t think things could get worse for the Baylor Bears, it looks like it could be very soon.
