Donald Trump tried to assure skittish GOP lawmakers Thursday that they all share the same Republican Party goals, but Senate antagonists withheld support after a tense meeting with the presidential candidate.

Earlier in the day Trump sat down with House Republicans, a meeting that Speaker Paul Ryan called “great”.

Flake told reporters after the meeting that he still can not support Trump for president “given the things that he said”. “The Members were in total agreement with Mr. Trump of the need to unite the Party and work together to win the Presidency and keep a Republican Congress”. He talked of repealing President Barack Obama’s health law, reducing regulatory burdens, overhauling tax laws and getting the Supreme Court to “be one that is more reflective of the values of the country”, according to Rep. Tom Price, R-Ga.

“That was a very deliberate reopening of the same conversation”, Gingrich said in an interview Thursday. “There was no talk of changing his style or anything like that”, said Rep. Peter King of NY. “You could feel it”, he said.

SCARBOROUGH: Some would say tragedies of this campaign, that Donald Trump is not in front of the camera like he is behind the camera and that he is extraordinarily courteous behind the camera, at least in the ten, eleven years that Mika and I have known him, he – we’ve never seen the Donald Trump in person that he shows the rest of the world when he’s behind a microphone.

Like Trump’s Senate supporters, Trump’s backers in the House said the meeting offered skeptics a chance to listen to Trump firsthand.

The Republican Party remains deeply divided with its national convention less than two weeks away.

There was a more cooperative tone inside Trump’s meeting with House Republicans, even if skeptical lawmakers didn’t necessarily hear what they were hoping for. Trump argues the star in his tweet was a regular star that a sheriff might use.

Other senators said Trump was openly dismissive of senators who didn’t support him.

Trump vowed to win IL in November, despite the fact it has voted Democratic in the last six presidential elections.

“It was a rare afternoon when he didn’t have a couple of students going with him back home to sit and drink tea and continue talking about what they had learned”, said Steely.

Trump’s meeting with Republican senators was outright contentious at times, according to The Washington Post. And the 80% who say they’ve given “quite a lot” of thought to the election stands well above the 67% who said so at this stage in 2012, the 72% who had paid that much attention as of June 2008, 58% in June 2004, 46% in June 2000, 50% in 1996 or 63% in 1992.

Other potential vice presidential prospects include Massachusetts Sen. Bob Corker took his name out of the running and Iowa Sen.

Hillary Clinton slammed Donald Trump for bankrupting his Atlantic City Casinos on Wednesday, July 6, 2016, saying the next chapter of American history shouldn’t include “chapter 11”.

Rep. Carlos Curbelo, in his first House term, said he had other priorities. Comey was summoned by House Republicans who are irate over his recommendation against criminal charges for Clinton’s classified email handling.

Democrats are moving to find political advantage from Trump’s appearance.

Despite House leaders’ positive statement about the gathering, several GOP lawmakers leaving the morning meeting said they are still unconvinced that Trump can be a good standard-bearer for the party.
