Canada’s jobs growth unexpectedly stalled in June even as the unemployment rate fell a notch to 6.8 percent, the government reported Friday.
Canadian manufacturing lost 13,000 jobs in June, with the ailing sector losing some 30,000 jobs over the past year, according to Statistics Canada’s latest monthly jobs report.
In the 12 months to June, the number of people employed edged up by 107,600, or 0.6 per cent, with the majority of gains in part-time work.
The data also showed that the labour market shed 40,100 full-time jobs and gained 39,400 less-desirable part-time positions.
Peterborough has the lowest jobless rate among Canada’s medium to large cities at just 4.5%.
“The details of the report are not particularly impressive”, said National Bank of Canada senior economist Matthieu Arseneau in a research note.
The jobless rate continues to be the highest in northern New Brunswick.
At Queen’s Park, Finance Minister Charles Sousa said despite the slight decline in last month’s job numbers the province “is on the right track”. The labor participation rate dropped to 65.5 percent, the lowest since December 1999.
