About 40 bridges have been washed away by the recent floods in Chitral.
During this period, the country receives heavy rains which cause flooding in various areas. The most affected area in Chitral was the Mulkhow union council, where more than a dozen people, including children and women, were reportedly missing. According to reports over 300 houses were swept away in floodwater.
Two C130 aircraft of Pakistan Air Force (PAF) are taking part in the operation, which besides airlifting relief items to the area, have also evacuated 80 persons. Another family of four were killed when their vehicle was carried off by a water channel in Khuzdar district in Balochistan, according to the disaster management authority there.
The NDMA has also made arrangements to keep communication links operative in disaster-hit areas to ensure smooth rescue and relief activities.
The KP CM said that in view of the expected more rains and flood warnings the provincial government has put on alert all the relevant government machinery to combat any emergency situation. “Up to 350 villages have been damaged in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and 422 in Punjab”.
From Sunday to Thursday, a severe weather system is likely to persist in Chitral district, having potential to produce glacial lake outburst flood and likely to cause flash flooding and urban flooding in vulnerable areas.
The Prime Minister has announced Rs 500 million aid relief package for those affected in the district besides Rs 5 lakh for each destroyed house as compensation and waiving of the agriculture loans.
