Petraeus case worse than Clinton’s emails — Federal Bureau of Investigation director

Gowdy continued: “Secretary Clinton said she used just one device”. He testified that he would treat John Doe the same way he would treat Hillary Clinton, that he was very forceful on that point. Comey responded that she hadn’t lied to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and refused to comment on whether she had lied in public statements.

Ryan also wrote to Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, requesting he deny Clinton access to classified information in light of the FBI’s finding that Clinton and her staff were “extremely careless” in their handling of classified information. “It’s far worse.” He didn’t hesitate when asked if he stands by the FBI’s call to prosecute Petraeus on criminal charges. As a result, although the Department of Justice makes final decisions on matters like this, we are expressing to justice our view that no charges are appropriate in this case.

“Secretary Clinton said all work-related emails were returned to the State Department”, Gowdy said. It was suspended in April so as not to interfere with the FBI’s inquiry. Earlier this week he said former officials could face loss of security clearances or other administrative sanctions.

Perhaps the biggest news, however, came when committee chairman Jason Chaffetz said he would instruct the FBI to investigate whether Mrs Clinton lied when she told Congress under oath that she did not email classified information.

“If teenagers in England were able to hack [those] personal email accounts. does it concern you that sophisticated hackers working for foreign interests never attempted or were successful in hacking Mrs. Clinton’s email accounts or one of her devices?” This is no average person.

Representative Jason Chaffetz, the chairman of the committee, asked Comey directly whether Clinton lied under oath about her email practices.

Mr Comey said he and the FBI investigated the case in a “professional and apolitical way”.

A “high-profile investigation” that began with hopes of bipartisanship “ends quietly in the basement (of the Capitol complex) in a secret hearing”, said Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., a member of the panel.

On Tuesday, Comey said 110 classified e-mails passed through Clinton’s servers, which were not kept on a secure government server.

A number of Republicans suggested there was a double standard for charging everyday people accused of crimes as opposed to high-level people like Clinton.

Gowdy: “Secretary Clinton said there was nothing marked classified on her emails, either sent or received”. Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings of Maryland told Comey “there is absolutely no evidence that you made your recommendation for political reasons” and asked him to “close the gap” by explaining the steps of the investigation. He would still be on the job if Clinton were elected president.

He said Petraeus obstructed justice and committed intentional misconduct and later admitted it was the wrong thing to do. “So given that assessment of the facts, my understanding of the law, my conclusion was and remains no reasonable prosecutor would bring this case”. “In my mind, it illustrates importantly the distinction to this case”.

Despite the no-prosecution decision, Comey had rebuked Clinton and her aides on Tuesday as being “extremely careless” in their handling of classified information and contradicted numerous explanations she’s put forward.
