Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo scores their first goal during Euro 2016 Semi-final against Wales at Stade de Lyon, in Lyon, France on Wednesday, July 6, 2016.

Ronaldo’s powerful header also saw him equal Michel Platini’s record of nine European Championship goals.

One of Wales’ few regrets was that they went down without one of their star performers during the tournament as Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey was missing through suspension.

Ronaldo and Nani scored early in the second half to earn Portugal a 2-0 win. “We tried our hardest to get back in the game, we fought until the last second and we are sorry we couldn’t get to the final, but we gave it everything”, he added.

Ronaldo – a serial victor in individual and team prizes in club football – will get another chance to win his first trophy on the global stage against either France or Germany in Sunday’s final at the Stade de France. We are disappointed, but we’ll pick ourselves back up. Barely two minutes later, Nani connected to Ronaldo’s low-drive into the area to make it two, as Portugal won in 90 minutes since the competition started in France.

Fans of all ages packed into clubs and coffee shops along Commercial Drive in Vancouver to cheer on Portugal and Wales in the European Championship semi-finals.

“I congratulated them on their run”, Ronaldo said, having embraced Bale after the whistle had blown. Bale, 26, said: “To be so close to the final and miss out is disappointing but we have to be proud of what we’ve achieved”.

The Real Madrid forward will have another shot at securing global glory after his decisive performance on Wednesday, but Wales midfielder Ledley was unimpressed.

The three-time Ballon d’Or victor said he was ready to do whatever was needed by his team.

“We’ve done plenty of winning”. “It was important for us to get over the psychological barrier and qualify for the first tournament”, said Coleman.

I’m proud of Wales. “We’ve come through some big tests, it’s been a great experience. It’s been one of those moments in life that you’ll never forget and is very special to all of us”.
