House OKs compromise bill reinforcing anti-drug programs

I strongly support language in the legislation regarding our detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, which would prevent funding for detention facilities in the United States to house Guantanamo detainees, for the transfer of Guantanamo detainees to the United States, and for the transfer of detainees to foreign counties except in accordance with certification and notification requirements in the National Defense Authorization Act of 2017.

The U.S. House approved Friday an agreement between itself and the U.S. Senate on bipartisan legislation meant to reduce the amount of national opioid and heroin abuse.

However, with only nine days left in session before recessing for seven weeks, it’s unlikely Congress will have time to tackle every priority.

Frustrated by Congress’s inability to pass an opioid bill, President Obama used his executive authority this week to take steps to combat the epidemic.

Leading congressional Democrats, including Florida Sen. Because of that, Senate Democrats are not playing along.

On the House floor before the vote, Pallone said he had made a decision to support the bill even though his attempt to add more money was unsuccessful.

“They’ll force yet another failed vote on this cynical legislation and then pack their bags for the longest Senate vacation since 1954”, Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid said earlier on Thursday. The price tag of $181 million more than doubles (132 percent) the authorization level in the original Senate-passed CARA bill.

“Our public health professionals estimate that the federal government needs $1.9 billion of funding to attack this emergency”, deputy spokesman Eric Schultz told reporters.

“I strongly urge you to advance a bipartisan bill that provides emergency funding, and is free of misguided policy riders”, said Nelson in his letter. After the administration complied, it continued to ask lawmakers to approve the full request and to replenish the Ebola account.

“And as a effect, there is not going to be funding for Zika”.

“Fortunately, we are one step closer to getting critical legislation to combat our nation’s opiate crisis to the president’s desk”.

Nelson told McConnell reminded that “both sides of the aisle came together on the Senate Floor” to pass its version of the $1.1 billion funding proposal. “In Michigan, we are enduring 10 times as many deaths today as there were 15 years ago”, said Energy and Commerce Chairman Fred Upton (R-Mich.) after the vote. Neither of the original bills from the House or Senate contained extra funding.

It also requires the department to convene a task force to review best practices for addressing chronic and acute pain management; authorizes grants for community-wide prevention efforts; increases access to anti-opioid drugs; allows nurse practitioners and physician assistants who meet certain criteria to dispense detoxification drugs, and makes special efforts to address opioid addiction among veterans and pregnant women. He introduced the measure in 2013, after the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Last month, the first case of microcephaly in a newborn was reported in Florida. The House will vote on his bill this week.
