Philando Castile honored by students; officers’ names released

Diamond Reynolds, the girlfriend of Philando Castile of St. Paul, cries outside the governor’s residence in St. Paul, Minn., on Thursday, July 7, 2016.

“He absolutely did everything that the police asked him to do up until he was killed”.

Beyonce stopped her concert in Glasgow on Thursday night to hold a minute’s silence for two black men who were shot dead by police in the United States this week.

But as night fell in St. Paul and chanting continued, word spread about the shooting of several officers in Dallas after a protest march there.

Reynolds streamed the gruesome aftermath of the slaying live on Facebook, telling a worldwide audience that her companion had been shot “for no apparent reason” while reaching for his wallet. Police also have refused to release details, including what led up to the traffic stop, why Castile was pulled over or why the officer drew his gun.

The Post says that 10 percent of black Americans shot and killed by police were not armed, while 61 percent had guns. Facebook reportedly said that a technical glitch kept the video from being viewed.

“It being transmitted to so many people, and then having the reaction from this community, the nation, the world”. “This has become something that people have expressed a lot of concern about”.

Gov. Mark Dayton’s strong words about this week’s killing of Philando Castile threw him straight into a suddenly reignited debate about how police treat people of color.

Dayton stated, “Would this have happened if those passengers, the driver were white?”

Reynolds initially described the officer as a “heavyset” Chinese man, according to a transcript of the Facebook live video. Due to its small size, Falcon Heights is served primarily by the nearby St. Anthony Police Department.

Reynolds and her young daughter witnessed police fatally shooting Castile during a traffic stop for a broken taillight.

When using Facebook Live, you can capture video and stream it as it’s happening on Facebook. “I said the first thing you do if you get stopped by police is you inform them you have a weapon, if you have it on you, and comply”. “He was just getting his license and registration, sir”.

Now, colleagues and family members are trying to understand why a police officer in a St. Paul suburb fatally shot Castile, 32, after stopping his auto Wednesday night.

Several videos, including squad vehicle video of the incident, have been collected, but St Anthony officers do not wear body cameras, the agency said.

The bureau did not give the officers’ races.

“We wholeheartedly reject the reprehensible acts of violence that were perpetrated against members of the Dallas Police Department”, she said in a statement Friday.

The previous year’s report includes a photo of Yanez solemnly standing guard at a memorial to fallen officers at the state Capitol.

Thomas Kelly, an attorney representing Yanez, did not immediately return a call seeking comment after the officers were identified.

A U. S. Justice Department spokesman said Thursday morning that the department “is aware of the incident and is assessing the situation”.

At a vigil Thursday evening outside the Montessori school where Castile worked, his mother, Valerie Castile, called her son “an angel”.

“This has to cease”.

“I’m just going to pray for justice over North Minneapolis”, said Hannah Daniels, 11, before bowing her head in front of the crowd. By about 3 a.m., the scene seemed to have calmed again, though some demonstrators remained outside the governor’s mansion.

“I commend Diamond for putting that video out when she did because if she hadn’t done that, we probably wouldn’t know the whole truth”, she said.

“There is no contradiction between us supporting law enforcement … and also saying that, there are problems across our criminal justice system”, he said.
