Unbeaten Strasburg pitches Nationals past banged-up Mets 3-1
The New York Mets’ injury woes compounded on Friday when All Stars Yoenis Cespedes and Noah Syndergaard left with ailments during a contest against Washington. “I didn’t have any discomfort, just fatigue really”, Syndergaard told reporters after the Mets’ 3-1 loss.

A great divisional matchup this evening as the Washington Nationals take on the New York Mets at Citi Field.
It’s been more than a century since a National League starting pitcher was as flawless as Stephen Strasburg so far. Clint Robinson hit a two-run home run in the second, and an inning later, Daniel Murphy had an RBI double to make it 3-0. The Cubs had won eight of the first nine meetings with Pittsburgh this year.
“But I certainly intend to pitch Noah Syndergaard in the All-Star game”.
Wilmer Flores hit a go-ahead, three-run homer and the surging New York Mets rallied past Washington 9-7 on Thursday night in the back-and-forth opener of a pivotal four-game series between the top teams in the NL East.
Syndergaard, the Mets’ ace, exited hours after NY announced Opening Day starter Matt Harvey would undergo season-ending surgery to fix thoracic outlet syndrome. Blake Treinen got out of a first-and-third jam with one out in the eighth by getting Juan Lagares to ground into an inning-ending double play. The big right-hander has been pitching with a bone spur in his right elbow that he called “pretty insignificant”.
“He just said his arm went dead”, Collins said afterwards. “But he said there’s no pain”.
Cespedes and Syndergaard were selected for the All-Star Game in San Diego, but both are unlikely to participate, Collins said. They are expected to be examined Saturday.
“It’s disappointing, but hopefully there will be a lot more”, Syndergaard said. “I’m a little exhausted of talking about it, but that s my job to talk about it”. After Syndergaard’s exit, it’s unlikely he’s going to pitch in Tuesday’s Midsummer Classic. Strasburg left after 6 2/3 hitless innings against Cincinnati because of his pitch count last time out, a precaution in Strasburg’s first start since an upper back strain put him on the DL.
Strasburg had hurled 6 2/3 innings of no-hit ball on Sunday against the Reds in his first start since coming off the disabled list with a back injury.
Asdrubal Cabrera broke up Strasburg’s no-hit bid with a leadoff home run in the fifth, his 11 of the season and second in as many days. Brandon Nimmo singled, too.
“I’m extremely disappointed to learn that I’ll be out for the season, but I’m relieved to have answers and get back to doing what I love”, Harvey posted on Twitter. “He tells me, with his arm, there’s nothing wrong, it’s just exhausted, and he needs some rest”. “I was kind of baffled a little bit because it wasn’t like anything else I had ever seen from him”. Jonathan Papelbon came in to pitch the bottom of the ninth and retired the Mets in order, including one strikeout, and picked up his 18th save of the season.
Nats GM, ump get in shouting match • Long after prized prospect Lucas Giolito stumbled in his second major league start, the frustrated Washington Nationals left Citi Field still angry at the umpires. “So, he’s as advertised”.

NOTES: Rain delayed the first pitch by 37 minutes. He’s batting.409 with 15 RBIs and five of his career-high 15 homers vs. NY trail the Nationals by four games in the NL East heading into this game and they would love to head into the all-star break with that number sitting at two, but they will need to find a way to tame Scherzer tonight.
