Will Fatal Tesla Crash Kill the Driverless Car Craze?
EAB is an essential part of Tesla’s Autopilot feature.

“What we know is that the vehicle was on a divided highway with Autopilot engaged when a tractor trailer drove across the highway perpendicular to the Model S. Neither Autopilot nor the driver noticed the white side of the tractor trailer against a brightly lit sky, so the brake was not applied”. “More than a million people die globally every year in vehicle accidents, but automakers do not disclose each of these accidents to investors, let alone before those investigations are complete and without regard to what the results of those investigations end up being”.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk is defending the automaker’s handling of a fatal crash involving its autopilot feature following two reports that question why it took Tesla almost two months to publicly disclose the accident.
“The bottom line is that Fortune jumped the gun on a story before they had the facts”, Tesla said in the blog post. “You are in effect using your customers as human guinea pigs”.
Moreover, Fortunate boldly assumed the accident was caused by an Autopilot failure.
But Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla, said in an email to Fortune that he didn’t disclose the death to shareholders because the news is “not material to the value of Tesla”.
Peter Henning, a law professor at Wayne State University in Detroit, said Tesla probably should have informed investors of the crash before its stock offering and SolarCity offer.
The police said that charges are pending against Baressi who didn’t yield the right of way when crossing the road in his semi-tractor trailer. Whether driven under manual or assisted mode, this presented a challenging and unexpected emergency braking scenario for the driver to respond to. But its manufacturer, Tesla Motors, has said that even when operating on autopilot, the driver should be ready to take control at any moment.
The company is pushing back against accusations that it acted unethically in the case of the fatal May 7 accident involving its Model S sedan while in Autopilot mode.
A July 1 crash in Pennsylvania in which the Model X rolled over and the occupants fortunately survived, is another example of blaming others, Consumer Watchdog said. Tesla, unlike Volvo, won’t take responsibility for crashes when Autopilot is on. In a statement on Wednesday, Tesla said it had “no reason to believe that Autopilot had anything to do with this accident” based on the information it had collected so far.

“Tesla should immediately disable the autopilot feature on all your vehicles until it can be proven to be safe”, the letter continued.
