Mets’ Matt Harvey opts for season-ending shoulder surgery
According to Boras, Harvey’s TOS is why he underperformed this season, going 4-10 with a 4.86 ERA in 17 starts. It was announced that Harvey will undergo surgery on his ailing right shoulder to address thoracic outlet syndrome that he is suffering from.

Boras said the syndrome is the reason Harvey has underperformed this season.
After missing the 2014 season following Tommy John surgery, Harvey went 13-8 with a 2.71 ERA a year ago in 29 starts covering a career-high 189 1/3 innings.
Harvey is set to undergo surgery with Dr. Robert Thompson sometime next week in St. Louis.
Thoracic Outlet Syndrome is a condition caused by compression of nerves, blood vessels or both in the area between the base of the neck and the armpit.
Harvey has had trouble commanding the baseball due to loss of feeling in his fingertips since spring training, and it’s showed in the results.
The New York Mets already had a hole in their rotation when Matt Harvey was placed on the DL this week. Logan Verrett will get a start on Saturday in Harvey’s place and could win the spot with strong performances.
Something seemed amiss on Monday, when Harvey allowed six runs (five earned) on 11 hits in 3.5 innings against the Miami Marlins.
The shoulder issues is what Boras points out as the reasoning behind Harvey’s struggles this season, as he was struggling to find the zone consistently.
There is good news for the team and Harvey, though.
“I think you can bounce back from it, but everybody’s different, as we know, anytime you have surgery”. Last season, Harvey pitched a career-high 216 innings between the regular season and postseason.
Collins and general manager Sandy Alderson met Friday with Harvey, but a club spokesman said the pitcher would not be available to reporters. “He didn’t make any excuses”, Collins said. “So, obviously, to the extent that we’re backed up for a period of time, it begins potentially to encroach on 2017 as well”.
