Struggling pitcher Matt Harvey has been placed on the disabled list by the New York Mets because of right shoulder discomfort.

The New York Mets say Matt Harvey will have season-ending surgery for his thoracic outlet syndrome injury.

“He just didn’t feel he had the command and feeling”, Harvey’s agent Scott Boras told reporters.

The 27-year-old struggled mightily this season, pitching to a 4-10 record with a 4.86 ERA through 92-and-two-thirds innings (17 starts).

Harvey, about 300 innings post Tommy John surgery, has chosen to undergo surgery to relieve symptoms of thoracic outlet syndrome, an ailment that can bring pain and/or numbness in the shoulder, neck and arm.

There is good news for the team and Harvey, though.

Mets reliever and go-to spot starter Logan Verrett is will take Harvey’s place in the rotation through at least Saturday, Terry Collins said Thursday.

Matt Harvey’s season could be over.

“We’ll take a look at what’s there”, Alderson said about the possibility of a trade. Harvey could opt for a nerve-block injection that could allow him to keep pitching, but he will eventually need a surgery that comes with a four-month recovery period.

“Again, anytime that you introduce a significant surgery of this type, I think you have to be cautious about what will happen”, Alderson said. Some pitchers, such as Josh Beckett and Chris Young, have bounced back and resumed their careers after surgery.

“It’s unclear how effective that would be or for how long”, Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said, per Rubin.

Unlike the Tommy John surgery Harvey had in October 2013, this surgery is not almost as common or as consistently successful. There are others. Some returned to their previous form, some did not, and now Harvey and the Mets (and the 2017 season) wait to learn where Harvey will fall. “He just said, you know, ‘I’m disappointed the way I pitched and I hope this cures me and we get back on track'”. The Mets started the day four games behind the Nationals in the N.L. East. The right-hander is 3-5 with a 4.01 ERA in 23 appearances this season, including five starts.
