Massive Hoverboard Recalls Means Thousands of People Will Be Forced to Walk

Well, you’re in luck because the U.S. Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is coordinating a recall of over 500,000 hoverboards due to safety issues.

Nearly 100 incidents have been reported, with some injuries and property damage, Kaye said.

The CPSC has a full list of the company’s recalling the boards on their website and says consumers should immediately stop using these hoverboards and contact companies for a full refund, a free fix or a free replacement, depending on the model. The CPSC has advised folks to quit using their hoverboard if it’s found to be on the list, and get in contact with the company to learn what it’s doing to remedy the problem.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), has warned users about certain models of the two-wheeled scooter because of fire hazard reasons. It urged consumers to immediately stop using and dispose of hoverboards that do not comply with the safety standards. The electrical system of the scooter is easy to catch fire, occasioning overheating, smoking, catching fire and sparking.

Hoverboards have had a swift fall from grace, going from one of the most popular purchases-if not the top gift-at the holidays past year to a major recall due to the significant dangers they pose.

The recall covers hoverboard models from eight importers: Digital Gadgets LLC, Monroe, New Jersey; Hoverboard LLC, Scottsdale, Arizona; Hype Wireless, Edison, New Jersey; Keenford Ltd, Hong Kong; PTX Performance Products USA, Irvine, California; Razor USA LLC, Cerritos, California; Yuka Clothing, of Miami; and Swagway LLC, of South Bend, Indiana.

All versions appear to be unsafe, and experts believe that the hazard comes from the way the vehicle’s lithium ion batteries are lodged near its motor. Amazon, Overstock, and other retailers ceased hoverboard sales after reports of major fire risk mounted during the holiday season.

The recall is for hoverboards made prior to May 2016 by certain manufacturers. They were quite prolific too, as it’s now emerged that more than 500,000 of them have been recalled due to unsafe components. A manufacturer should be able to prove the device is certified as safe from the Underwriters Laboratories.
