One Sheffield councillor told The Star many elected Labour representatives in the city had “concerns” about Mr Corbyn’s leadership but some supported him during last year’s leadership race.

An alternative group called Saving Labour, dedicated to replacing him with “strong new leadership”, has been recently established to encourage people with “moderate” views to join the party.

The Labour leader lost a vote of “no confidence” by 172 MPs to 40.

Mr Corbyn has also received motions of support from constituency parties, including one last week from Angela Eagle’s Wallasey constituency.

Labour MPs opposed to Jeremy Corbyn have reportedly conceded the embattled Labour leader can not be removed after lengthy negotiations between the party’s deputy leader Tom Watson and union officials failed to resolve the conflict.

Mr Corbyn’s supporters are buoyed by the huge increase in Labour Party membership.

“I stand ready to do anything I can to save and serve the party”.

He is losing support of the membership by the day, there is no doubt about that, but they just sign up new members to replace them.

An overwhelming majority of Labour MPs passed a vote of no confidence in Corbyn.

Speaking at a Momentum rally on Wednesday night, shadow business secretary Jon Trickett said: “The publication of the Chilcot report should remind all of us why Jeremy is our leader”.

Ruth, who said she voted for Corbyn to be leader but now questioned his leadership, said: “The atmosphere was absolutely toxic, and for the first time in my dealings with the Bristol Labour Party I felt threatened”.

More than 60 MPs have resigned from Labour’s front bench and support team in the past week, including Wolverhampton South West MP Rob Marris who quite as a shadow junior treasury minister.

But Ms Eagle struck a bullish tone, saying: “The country doesn’t have an effective opposition at the moment”.

Given how few supporters Mr Corbyn has left among Labour MPs and MEPs, he might struggle to find 50 who are prepared to nominate him.
