Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates

Long story short: they get picked up by good girls Tatiana (Aubrey Plaza) and Alice (Anna Kendrick) who turn out to be cray-cray in all the right ways. It would be easy to push the boundaries for the sake of comedy, but essentially this is a amusing movie about family and how they can drive you insane. Tatiana and Alice at first make a good impression, Alice helps Jeanie unwind with an erotic message while Tatiana gives into the advances of bisexual Cousin Terry (Alice Wetterlund) for Rihanna tickets in a sequence that inspires laughs you might not be proud of yourself for giving in to. The gap between bros-will-be-bros goofiness and the human collateral in their wake is hilariously illustrated. Two rowdy brothers get bullied into bringing nice-girl dates to their sister’s wedding in Hawaii.

“Mine’s my d**k”, Efron said while pretending to be DeVine when asked about his favourite body part.

The upside? Kendrick and Plaza get to be just as stupid as DeVine and Efron.

One of those cut scenes has Dave and Mike crying, coming to terms with what shitty, selfish people they are, and the spirit of his own words so moves Mike that he salutes and starts singing the national anthem with tears in his eyes. In the movie, Mike and Dave’s sister Jeanie (played by Sugar Lyn Beard) is marrying Eric, portrayed by Second City alum Sam Richardson.

Following Bad Neighbours and Dirty Grandpa, Zac Efron continues his foray into the R-rated and the B-rated – although in this case, B-rated would be a gargantuan compliment.

“That is true about Adam Devine”, he said. Two very talented women who have no business being here. But when their ideal dates – played by Anna Kendrick and Aubrey Plaza – turn out to be much crazier than expected, the guys must reel them in to ensure the wedding is a success.

See, I told you it was confusing, but watch the video interview at the top of this page and it should all make sense. The two women who become the titular wedding dates (Anna Kendrick and Aubrey Plaza) prove that they are just as capable as any boy in debasing themselves in service to earning a laugh or two. And as befits a movie containing stars of “High School Musical” and “Pitch Perfect”, there is singing, not to mention wonderfully unpredictable little bits of random, seemingly improvised comedy: Consider the priceless line, “Once I got high on peyote and signed up for a T-Mobile plan”.
