Stanton hits 2 homers again, but Marlins lose to Mets 4-2

Stanton became the first player to ever post back-to-back multi-homer games at Citi Field, and his 17 home runs are the most at the venue by an opposing player.

The Mets (46-38) have won six of their last seven games, including taking two in the three-game series with the Marlins (44-41). They were both in the lineup on Tuesday and Wednesday but that figures to be hard on a regular basis with Neil Walker and Asdrubal Cabrera entrenched up the middle and James Loney performing solidly at first base. After fouling out in his first at-bat, Reyes laced a double inside the third base line for his first hit of the season.

It was anything but a storybook return to Citi Field for Jose Reyes on Tuesday night against the Marlins.

Reyes is expected to play third base regularly for the Mets, and he also could see action in the outfield.

Day 2 back with the New York Mets felt a lot more comfortable for Jose Reyes. “It was like another day for me”.

How does Reyes feel about potentially competing with Flores for at-bats?

Mets skipper Terry Collins, who will manage the National League next Tuesday in San Diego, said New York RHP Noah Syndergaard (9-3, 2.41 ERA) is “in the mix” to start the All-Star Game.

The Mets grabbed the lead in the bottom of the second inning when Flores launched a solo homer (6) to center field off Marlins’ starter Justin Nicolino.

Flores connected twice off left-hander Justin Nicolino (2-5), who fell to 0-5 in his last 10 major league starts.

The Angels had lost 12 of 14 games before bouncing back for the road win, with Cron breaking open a back-and-forth game with a three-run home run in the ninth.

“I thought about it, I am not going to lie, but it didn’t happen”, Flores said. “I got the pitches, but it didn’t happen”.

DeGrom halted a two-month winless drought last time out against the Chicago Cubs, giving up one run and three hits while striking out seven in five innings before rain ended his night. The second blast was the 200th career homer for Stanton, who went deep twice in a game for the 18th time in his career. On Tuesday, he homered in the seventh and eighth innings against Steven Matz and Erik Goeddel, respectively.

Flores’ second homer, a shot into the left-field seats leading off the fourth, gave the Mets a 4-1 lead. He struck out Chris Johnson with the bases loaded in the first inning in a scoreless game, and worked around a runner reaching second with no outs in the third. Reyes had two doubles and finished 2-for-4 with a run scored. Rene Rivera walked leading off the inning to begin the rally. But, yet, we’ve got a hot hitter sitting on the bench that we can run up in any big situation during the game when we have to have him. They don’t go down without a fight. He’s been swinging the bat really well lately.
