Roughly 7,800 Israelis live in Kiryat Arba, which sits on the edge of the largest Palestinian city, Hebron. It is a city where Palestinian militant group Hamas garners notable support and where thousands of Israeli soldiers protect hundreds of Jewish settlers living among a population of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians.
The demolition operations have led to violent clashes with Palestinians from the camp who threw stones and opened fire at the Israeli demolition crew, continued the spokesman, noting that the security forces had responded with gunfire.
Since October 1, the violence in the Palestinian territories, Israel and Jerusalem have killed 214 Palestinians, 34 Israelis, two Americans, an Eritrean and a Sudanese, according to an unofficial count by a local NGO.
The violence had subsided in recent weeks, but a deadly shooting at a cafe in Tel Aviv by two Palestinians on June 8 and last week’s series of attacks have raised concern.
