Gun, not race, sparked Philando Castile killing, officer’s lawyer says

Bryan Strawser says the non-partisan caucus, which advocates for “firearm freedoms in Minnesota”, supports the investigation being conducted by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and joins with Governor Dayton in asking for an independent federal investigation.

“The deaths of Alton Sterling, Philando Castile and the officers in Dallas are unacceptable”. Sterling, who was also black, was shot after a scuffle with officers outside a convenience store.

“Police understand the concerns about choices made about who gets stopped and what happens when they get stopped”, said Darrel Stephens, executive director of the Major Cities Chiefs Association. Graphic video of that incident caused an outcry on social media.

The demonstrations in Baton Rouge had been largely peaceful, but there were some tense moments Friday night and early Saturday.

Yanez and an officer who was with him, Joseph Kauser, were put on administrative leave, as is standard, authorities said.

“We know there’s going to be an external investigation”. He said he was trying to move the crowd along and keep the peace. He died a short time later at a hospital.

The shooting of 32-year-old Castile, the aftermath of which was live-streamed on Facebook by his girlfriend, came soon after the release of a video of another black man’s death at the hands of police in Louisiana, and together the two events have sparked nationwide outrage and protests.

Taking to her website, she wrote: ‘This week we watched Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, two innocent black men, get senselessly murdered by police officers.

Several videos, including squad auto video of the incident, have been collected, but St Anthony officers do not wear body cameras, the agency said.

Castile, uncle of Philando Castile, speaks outside the Governor’s Mansion on July 7, 2016 in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Officials say Castile was fatally shot by police in Falcon Heights, Minn., Wednesday, July 6, 2016, while inside a auto with a woman and a child.

Authorities say that during the traffic stop, Yanez approached Castile’s auto from the driver’s side and another officer approached from the passenger side.

Officer: “Shots fired Larpenteur and Fry”.

His lawyer, Thomas Kelly, said Saturday that his client reacted to the fact that Castile had a gun, not his race, though Kelly would not discuss what led Yanez to initiate the traffic stop. Dayton said Friday that he stood by his statements and had no new information about the case, even as the head of a law enforcement organization ripped his comments as reckless. Two civilians were also wounded. Surely they will be demanding action, petitioning congressmen, demanding the Department of Justice to step forward and make sure that every American has a right to arm themselves without fear of being gunned down by the police!

Police killed the gunman with a bomb-carrying robot after cornering him in a parking garage, ending an hours-long standoff.

The bureau did not give the officers’ races. Officers crouched beside vehicles, armored SWAT team vehicles arrived and a helicopter hovered overhead.
