After getting hit, Williams said Taylor jumped on top of her 15-year-old son on the ground, and pushed him in between vehicles and the curb.

“He was really selfless and he put himself in harm’s way … to protect us”, Waivon told the news conference.

It was very peaceful.

They were heading home early so she wouldn’t be too exhausted for work in the morning when she heard the first gunshot. She was obviously emotionally affected while she recapped what happened that night.

A second civilian was shot during the ambush but police have not released information on their condition. I saw him kind of tall, hefty, white guy, bald. “As he was going down, he said, ‘He has a gun”.

Moments later other officers called out to find out if anyone was hurt.

Taylor broke down as she described the pain that news brought her alongside the celebration she felt for her own children’s safety.

“Why would he do that?” she said.

She was one of two civilians wound during the deadly shooting spree.

Other officers watched over Taylor and her son as the shots continued. “And my son Andrew had turned around to grab me cause he didn’t, I guess he turned around to see where I was and he went to grab me, but I had already been shot”. Because it was… I’ve never been in a situation like that before. It was hundreds of rounds. Kent Giles captured the image and told CNN the following, “I heard multiple shots being fired. It was just shots all around us”, she said. “I tell my kids all the time, you know, ‘Closed mouth, open mind will get you a long way in life.’ Sometimes, just be quiet and think first”. “Just the praise I gave to God”.
