Rain, tears and teens with Olympic track spots on the line

Carter improved on her previous best of the day by 19 inches to win the U.S. Olympic track and field trials women’s shot with a toss of 64-3¼ on the final throw of the competition at a rainy Hayward Field.

On Friday, she finished third in her heat in a driving rainstorm, coming up 1/100th of a second short of qualifying for the finals later Friday.

“It was really hard to grasp the discus with the weather”, he said. “I did my best, and that’s all you can ask for, go out and do what you can do”.

Montano did get up.

She was every bit as dumbfounded by this finish, too. “So let’s see him put it out there”.

“I remember thinking, ‘There’s no way in four years I’m going to be watching it, ‘” she said. They did not disqualify anyone.

Despite not being at her best, Winger still sported a medal around her neck after the event.

If anyone would know, it would be her.

“I’m definitely a hungry individual when it comes to the hurdles, ” she said.

Saunders was second at 63-1½, edging Felisha Johnson (63-1¼), who took third.

Keni Harrison picked the wrong time to have her worst day on the track. “I really have no control over it, so it doesn’t change how I’m training for the Olympics”.

She cruised into the final and, for 600 meters, everything looked fine. But she started experiencing lower back pain and tests indicated that low bone density was causing some stress and compression fractures.

NEXT TRIALS: USA Track and Field CEO Max Siegel said at a federation board meeting Saturday that, nice as it would be to firm up the choice, he’s waiting to see how the finances play out with meet organizers in Eugene before deciding whether to bring the Olympic Trials back in 2020.

And Montano saw some dreams slip away.

“There’s a lot of healing”, she said, “that has to happen beyond this race”.

WANT FRIES WITH THAT?: Less than two years ago, Boris Berian was flipping burgers at a fast-food restaurant. In less than two months, he’ll be running at the Olympics. Ameer Web and Tyson Gay also advanced to the final. Nike dropped the lawsuit and Berian made it. That shows just what an awesome throw that was by Mason today. The others who’ve hit the qualifying mark are Sheila Reid, Nicole Sifuentes, Fiona Benson and Gabriella Stafford. So did fourth-place finisher Sam Crouser and, yes, the victor, Cyrus Hostetler.

The defending Olympic champion in the pole vault warmed up, then cooled down, then ran through the whole process again, as the driving rain pelted the field Friday at the track and field trials.

Felix said her injured right ankle was more or less the same as it has been all week.

RUPP ROMP: Galen Rupp, Bernard Lagat and Lopez Lomong all made it through qualifying at 5,000 meters.

Temporary bleachers are used to boost Hayward Field’s capacity from more than 10,500 people to about 22,000. He’s already qualified for the 10K and plans on competing in that event.
