However, the injury is understood to be much worse than feared with scan results on Friday expected to confirm the fracture.

Arsenal have confirmed that Jack Wilshere is set for a priod on the sidelines, after widespread reports of yet another injury to the 23-year-old’s ankle.

Wilshere sustained the injury in training on Saturday, but Arsenal were said to be initially confident that he would be fit again by the end of the next worldwide break at the start of September.

“I had a bad surprise because it is a hairline crack in his fibula that makes him a few weeks out“, manager Arsene Wenger told the club website.

He required two operations after suffering ligament damage in November and returned for the Gunners’ final six games of the campaign, including the FA Cup final success against Aston Villa.

Wilshere has struggled with leg and ankle problems since 2010.

Arsenal will play their league opener against West Ham United this weekend at the Emirates Stadium.

The good news for Arsenal was the return to training of Danny Welbeck after a knee injury.

Wenger can also call on Welsh worldwide Aaron Ramsey and Chile’s Alexis Sanchez, plus back-up from Tomas Rosicky and Mikel Arteta, but Wilshere will still be missed.
