Indian PM in Kenya on last leg of 4-nation African tour

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday his country was considering an additional 500 million US dollars concessional credit to Tanzania for water projects. India and Tanzania signed five agreements after the delegation-level talks, including two on water supply and water resource management.

“Homage to a great son of Africa, a friend of India”. 65-year-old Modi was seen enjoying the drumming session with the Tanzanian President, who appeared to halt briefly but resumed the drumming again when he saw the Indian leader was in no mood to stop.

“Today, the Indian-origin community in Tanzania is an important link between our peoples in the fields of business, healthcare, and education”, he said.

Earlier, The Prime Minister concluded his visit of South Africa with a civic reception given by the Mayor of Durban at the city hall.

Prior to the banquet, Modi interacted with members of the Indian community, which numbers around 50,000 in Tanzania.

India and Kenya on Monday signed 7 MoUs in areas including taxation and defence among others during PM Narendra Modi’s visit to the country. After completing his engagements in Tanzania, Modi left for Kenya on the fourth and last leg of his four-nation African tour. “We also want more investors in fisheries and tourism sectors which are not well developed”, the Tanzania premier stressed.

Modi said that India was already a substantial economic partner of Tanzania and the whole range of economic ties were healthy and on the upswing.

Currently, India sells more to Tanzania than what Tanzania export to India.

Minister for Industry, Trade and Investment Charles Mwijage said the two countries are depending on each other when it comes to trade.

According to another agreement, India will extend a line of credit of $15 million (first tranche of $30 million) to IDB Capital, Kenya, for development of various small and medium enterprises [SMEs] in the east African country.

Harshavardhan Neotia, President of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industries (FICCI), said trade between the two nations continues to grow.
