Kashmir seethes as 20 killed amid anti-India protests

The Amnesty International has urged Indian authorities to ensure that people injured in firing by Indian forces have access to medical assistance, and medical professionals should have freedom to carry out their work without interference.

The state government has said that it will also investigate reports of excessive police violence towards unarmed protesters.

In the wake of the current spate of violence, the Indian government cut electricity supply, blocked roads and the internet as part of the wider crackdown on protesters.

Shops, businesses and government offices remained closed.

Thousands attended his funeral which was held in his hometown of Tral, about 40km (25 miles) south of Srinagar, on Saturday.

In the protests following the assassination of Kashmiri leader Burhan Wani, dozens of protesters killed and hundreds have been injured after Indian Army opened fire on them and imposed curfew to halt processions. Most deaths occurred in clashes with security forces in Anantnag, Shopian, Kulgam and Pulwama districts of south Kashmir.

“The extra-judicial killing of Kashmiri leader Wani and scores of other innocent Kashmiris is deplorable and condemnable. They are so disconnected from this place”, Farook said.

Call for the strike was given by the Chairman of All Parties Hurriyet Conference Syed Ali Gilani and Hurriyet Leaders Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik.

Amid the protests, Indian officials indefinitely suspended an annual Hindu pilgrimage to a mountain cave that draws about half a million people each year.

“No yatri [pilgrim] will be allowed to move towards the Valley from Bhagwati Nagar Yatri Niwas in Jammu city today”, a senior officer reportedly said.
