Twitter has struck a deal with CBS to stream both the Democratic and Republican National Conventions later this month, the company announced Monday.
It’s also unclear whether or not Twitter will make money from the stream through advertising as it will with the ten National Football League games it plans to stream later this fall.
The social media company will use live tweets to enhance coverage of the presidential candidate nomination process, on top of CBS News’ digital streaming news service, CBSN, the companies said Monday in a statement.
The streams will be powered by Twitter’s new Live platform – the same platform that recently hosted live coverage of the Wimbledon tournament, in what Twitter called a “test”. Whether it’s breaking news, entertainment, sports, or everyday topics, only Twitter lets you connect with people anywhere in the world with live conversation.
Twitter has been building up-and building out-its livestream capabilities with a number of high-profile events.
CBSN’s convention coverage will be “gavel to gavel”, according to a release, and will be anchored by reporters Josh Elliott, Elaine Quijano, and Vladimir Duthiers.
Leaders at both Twitter and CBS News believe their partnership will be well-suited for the challenge of covering them.

CBS News previously teamed up with Twitter on a Democratic presidential debate November 14, 2015, and a Republican presidential debate February 13, with CBS’ coverage of those events including real-time analytics, curated tweets and live questions tweeted by voters and presented to the candidates.
