“After that I expect to go to (Buckingham Palace) and offer my resignation”, he told reporters outside his office in Downing Street.

It wasn’t clear whether the flap affected Leadsom’s decision to drop out.

Graham Brady, a member of Parliament who is chairman of the committee overseeing the Conservative Party leadership election, said he would have procedural conversations Monday afternoon with the party’s board to determine the process of choosing a new prime minister.

Five candidates put their names forward to replace Cameron as the head of the Conservative Party and thus the next prime minister.

In Britain’s parliamentary system, the leader of the ruling party is automatically made prime minister.

Speaking on the steps of her campaign headquarters in Westminster, the she wished Mrs May “the very greatest success” and promised her “my full support”.

Andrea Leadsom, one of two Conservative lawmakers vying to replace Prime Minister David Cameron, withdrew from the contest Monday, leaving Home Secretary Theresa May as the sole remaining candidate.

And the Liberal Democrats and Greens demanded an early election following Mrs May’s “coronation”.

Labour’s election co-ordinator, Jon Trickett, said: “It is crucial, given the instability caused by the Brexit vote, that the country has a democratically elected prime minister. I don’t think that’s a great legacy”, Ms Eagle told Sky News.

Leadsom says she has concluded she does not have “sufficient support” to win. “I deeply regret that anyone has got the impression that I think otherwise”.

Andrea Leadsom, who has withdrawn from the race to be Britain’s prime minister, faced a media frenzy over the weekend after comments about the role of motherhood in politics.

“I have no doubt Theresa will make an excellent party leader and prime minister and I’m encouraged that she’s made it clear that Brexit means Brexit-that we will leave the European Union”, he said.

British Prime Minister David Cameron said he would officially resign by Wednesday as Home Minister Theresa May appeared set to take over the reins.

“I absolutely said, what I specifically said, is that motherhood should not play a part in the campaign”, she said.

She said that a nine-week leadership campaign in the wake of the Brexit vote was “highly undesirable”.

Cameron says it’s clear May has “the overwhelming support” of Conservative lawmakers.

“I’ve had conversations with people who want to vote for her who’ve been told they couldn’t vote for her because she was an extremist, there were all sorts of suggestions that somehow she was deeply Ukip when in fact that’s her sole goal in life is to destroy Ukip by getting the Conservative Party in the right place over the vote to leave”.

“I am proud to have been a member of Theresa May’s campaign team and know she will make an outstanding leader of our country”. She’s 59 years old, seen also as steady, if unexciting kind of hand.

“I will make sure that we leave the European Union”, said May, who has promised to begin formal talks to leave the EU by the end of the year at the earliest despite pressure from EU leaders to speed up.

“I have no doubt that Theresa is the right person at the right time to negotiate the best possible deal for the United Kingdom, and take on the many other challenges we face as a society”.

One said: “While I really respect Theresa May, I find it hard to see how she can lead the negotiations to leave the European Union”.

Mrs May said: “If you’re from an ordinary working class family life is just much harder than many people in politics realise”.

“Angela Eagle is in the unusual position of wanting to challenge the leadership but not wanting the leader on the ballot”, the party’s health spokeswoman said.
