‘Pets’ upends ‘Dory,’ rules the box office with $103.2 million

The movie unseated another computer-animated favorite in Disney-Pixar’s “Finding Dory”, which dipped to third place with just over $6 million on Friday. Long live The Secret Life of Pets.

Pets, which features the voices of Louis C.K., Kevin Hart, Ellie Kemper, and Steve Coogan among others, raked in over $100 million in its opening weekend. Another animated film has opened up, and Universal Pictures have stepped up their game, as The Secret Life of Pets is easily heading toward winning the weekend box office.

The Secret Life of Pets, the next animation from Despicable Me and Minions studio Illumination Entertainment is out today, so watch a few clips and more below. “This proves if you have a truly original idea – not a sequel, not a franchise, not something already known – that you can still create a massive hit”.

“The Legend Of Tarzan”, which holds at #2, earned $20.6 million this weekend.

Pets has opened to a massive $103.2 million (£79.7 million) in the United States, while Inside Out opened to $90.4 million (£69.8 million) past year. This would put the animated movie at approximately $50 million in weekend number two. Much of that was propelled by the success of its family fare including “The Jungle Book”.

The raunchy comedy Mike And Dave Need Wedding Dates also surpassed expectations with an estimated $16.6 million (£12.8 million) for a fourth place debut.

The Secret Life of Pets is now at 75% on Rotten Tomatoes after 110 counted reviews, not that critical reception really matters when it comes to an animated movie, I mean most kids aren’t that demanding anyway.

Fifth with $11.7 million was “The Purge: Election Year”, a dystopian thriller in which the government has sanctioned an annual night of lawlessness, violence and murder.

Art-house offering Captain Fantastic lived up to the name: The family drama starring Viggo Mortensen made $98,500 in its initial limited-run opening – averaging $24,600 per screen.
