Basel was among mourners and protesters who have gathered regularly at the site of Sterling’s death – outside a convenience store on a commercial thoroughfare of a working-class, predominantly black neighborhood.
“I noticed that there were protesters, came in and my daughter was on the porch and we recognized they were going to be arrested”.
In Pittsburgh Saturday, several hundred people broke off from the city’s 200th anniversary parade to protest recent police shootings across the country.
Protesters march to the state Capitol in Baton Rouge, La., Sunday, July 10, 2016.
“We certainly respect the right people have to gather peacefully, to protest peacefully and we’re going to protect that right”, Sheriff Sid J. Gautreaux III of East Baton Rouge Parish said at the press conference.
Edwards also said it is critical for people attending protests to follow the directions of law enforcement officers. No word yet on the extent of their injuries.
Most of Sunday’s arrests took place near downtown Baton Rouge, where police said they stopped a group of protesters from walking onto Interstate 110. The caller allegedly told police the man had a gun and threatened someone.
Castile, a school cafeteria worker, was shot and killed by a police officer in Falcon Heights, Minn., on Wednesday.
“Don’t fight me. Don’t fight me”, the officer says.
Howell said officers who do “reckless, risky things” must be held accountable. After the investigation, the AP reported, “one officer had been suspended without pay for three days, one was reprimanded and three others were to be counseled by supervisors”.
The Baton Rouge PD would not comment to Reason when reached by phone, but Lt. Jonny Dunham of the Baton Rouge PD told Begnaud that by trying to get on the Interstate, “the protesters had already broken the law”. Police said early on Sunday they had begun clearing the highway of debris in preparation for re-opening it.
Baton Rouge, the other city reeling from the killing of one of its residents, also witnessed masses of people taking to the streets. A leader of the group, which calls itself the Philly Coalition for REAL Justice, told the Daily News (http://bit.ly/29pHEkY) that it wants to disrupt and shut down police activity and traffic in the precincts.
The 9News Investigators also found complaints of force filed against the two officers in their histories with BRPD’s Internal Affairs.
Louisiana’s attorney general says he won’t have access to the federal investigation on the Alton Sterling shooting until it’s completed and a decision has been made on potential federal charges.
Both officers were placed on administrative leave after the shooting, which is standard procedure. His girlfriend filmed the aftermath of the shooting, and has insisted that Castile complied with the police officer who pulled them over before he was shot four times. Many were equally upset that I had not spelled out that the protestor was violating the law by obstructing a highway and refusing to comply with instructions to move to the side of the road. Another of those detained and held overnight was DeRay Mckesson, a prominent Black Lives Matter activist, who was live-streaming video from the shoulder of the road when he was tackled by an officer.

A GoFundMe page has been set up for people to donate to a scholarship fund for Sterling’s children, including his eldest son who is 15-year-old.
