Doctor Who: Why Matt Smith’s rumoured return is just wishful thinking
Matt Smith, the former Doctor Who actor who played the Eleventh 11th regeneration of the Time Lord, might become the first actor to return to the role. The Sci-Fi show’s writer and producer, Steven Moffat, is hinting that Matt Smith may return to the TARDIS even though his character regenerated into Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor. The rumor mills are not stopping from churning out speculations that hints at Capaldi’s co-terminus exit with showrunner Moffat will be the entry that Smith needs.

Matt Smith left Doctor Who in 2013. And if this does happen, news reports will be considering this move by BBC and by Moffat as not moving on too.
Representatives for Doctor Who and Matt have been contacted by MailOnline for comment.
Doctor Who has a long history of changing out the actor who plays the Doctor.
Doctor Who fans are backing Matt Smith to return as the Time Lord if Peter Capaldi steps down.
There’s a big difference between Matt Smith mentioning at a convention that he’d like to come back and Matt Smith actually coming back.
The showrunner told The Mirror that Smith is “quite open about how much he misses it, and how much he wishes he hadn’t left”. Not only was his friend and “ally” leaving the series, but he could not convince the man to stay and it felt like “everything was blowing up around” him. However, speculations suggest that this season may also be the last run for Peter Capaldi as The Doctor. Earlier this year, when asked by a fan if he’d like to play the Doctor again, the actor quickly said, “I really want to”. Moffat, who is also preparing to leave the show in 2017, talked about the actor’s regret about leaving.
Post-Doctor Who, Smith has starred in Ryan Gosling’s Lost River, Terminator Genisys, with Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, as well as several theater productions. He will be seen next as Prince Phillip in Netflix’s “The Crown” in November.
