Travel survey bumps Kyoto from world’s top tourist spot

The rankings are based on a survey of Travel + Leisure readers who were invited to offer their opinions on a wide variety of categories, from airlines and cruise ships to hotels and tour operators, based on defined characteristics provided by the magazine and its digital marketing firm partner, Wylei. To make it onto the magazine’s list, readers were asked to rate the hotels on their rooms, location, service, facilities, food and drink, and overall value, according to the publication.

Munro’s, a bookstore on Victoria’s Government street, was named one of the world’s best bookstores by National Geographic earlier this year.

“Charleston is a remarkably dynamic place, so it’s no surprise that it has achieved its highest ranking ever in our survey as this year’s best city in the world”, Travel + Leisure editor Nathan Lump said.

Savannah rose four spots in the national rankings, a year ago they were number 7 among USA cities. “Antebellum charm, excellent boutiques, and the handsome waterfronts at Sullivan’s Island and Folly Beach make this city one of the most beloved in the US -and now, the world”.

Making its first appearance on the world’s best cities list coming in at No. 9, Savannah was ranked No. 7 in 2015 in the United States list, leaping to No. 3 for 2016.

“The area’s tourism and hospitality community has enjoyed positive growth over the past four years, due in part to the numerous awards bestowed on the Charleston area”, he said. Among Travel + Leisure’s ranking of top resort hotels in the continental U.S., Rancho Valencia came in at No. 15.

“The best hotels in American cities are those that introduce you to your destination the moment you drop your bags”, reads Travel + Leisure.

“There’s a a lot of hard-working people on this Island and we’re blessed with such a attractive area to work with”, she said.

Travel + Leisure has the world’s largest audience of any travel magazine.

“The cat’s out of the box”, she said of Charleston’s allure.
