“Dory” Edges Out “Tarzan” At The Box-Office

The movie hauled in $41.9 million over the weekend – the studio expects to clock $50m in total over the four-day holiday – and in its so far three-week release, has taken $538.3m globally.

Finding Dory” is expected to overtake “Toy Story 3” ($415 million) as the highest grossing Pixar movie of all time at the domestic box office by next week.

Dory is expected to finish the four-day holiday weekend with an estimated $50.19 million gross.

Disney’s Hollis acknowledged the studio was disappointed with the results, but hopes that the film would get a lift in the coming weeks as families seek out entertainment options to keep children occupied during their summer vacations. The Purge: Election Year opened in 3rd with $31.5 million, up from The Purge: Anarchy ($29.8 million), but down from The Purge ($34.1 million). “We’re positively looking forward”.

The third installment of the “Purge” series follows a police officer (Frank Grillo) who is tasked with protecting a senator who is running for president (Elizabeth Mitchell) while she is targeted for death after vowing to end the bloody ritual. It also achieved a successful CinemaScore of A+ (and A- from those under 18) which could help retain its audience going into its second week and internationally – which it will need to justify the huge $180 million budget.

The news was a bit better for The Legend of Tarzan, which performed well-above expectations, landing at No. 2 with $45.6 million.

The second place spot went to The Legend of Tarzan with $38 million.

It’s not often director Steven Spielberg lays an egg, but the Big Friendly Giant opened with a big, fat thud, good for only fourth place in this week’s standings.
