Paris: Football threw up another unlikely hero on Sunday when journeyman professional Eder scored the goal that won Euro 2016 for Portugal.
Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey and Dimitri Payet of West Ham have been named in Uefa’s team of Euro 2016.
Almost 60 readers were feeling the blues after originally tipping the more widely fancied France to win the final early Monday morning (July 11) on home soil.
Not because they favour Portugal over France, nor Leicester over Arsenal – and certainly not Iceland over England. “Everything we’ve experienced over the past few weeks and months has been positive so I’m just disappointed we couldn’t win this trophy for the millions of fans”, he said.
Ronaldo’s tears of pain and anguish as he was carried off turned to tears of joy at the final whistle, and shrugging off his injured knee, the forward danced past reporters with other Portugal players as they left the stadium.
“Cristiano told me I would be scoring the winning goal”, Eder said.
Two times European champions.
Santos had always said he does not care if Portugal win “ugly” as long as they win.
Ronaldo fell to the turf again in the 17th. That brought tears to Ronaldo’s eyes and set the table for one of the thousands of moths that invaded the State de France prior to kickoff to become the star of the show.
But Ronaldo’s mobility was restricted.
However, Ronaldo spent much of Sunday’s match alongside Santos in the technical area giving the sort of encouragement to his team mates which is often lacking when he is playing.
The clock hit 23 minutes and Ronaldo ripped off his captain’s armband and tossed it on the turf.

Right back Cedric Soares said “unbelievable” motivational words from Ronaldo at half time had helped spur Portugal to victory. The 31-year-old superstar then spent the rest of the game yelling directions at his teammates, helping his country bring home the championship from the sidelines.
