Home Run Derby 2016: How it happened

“I figure it’s a waste if I don’t bring this bad boy home”.

The Trumbo-Seager victor will face the victor of the matchup between fourth-seeded Robinson Cano of the Seattle Mariners, the 2011 Home Run Derby champion, and fifth-seeded Giancarlo Stanton of the Miami Marlins. But it wasn’t enough as Adam Duvall (23), who rose from platoon player to All-Star this season, managed to knock him out.

However, some new construction around the park in recent years – combined with some minor reductions in the distance of the outfield fences in 2013 – may have finally turned the tables. Each player gets four minutes to take as many swings as possible, and Duvall still had 90 seconds on the clock when he hit his 11th home run to pass Myers. The rapid-fire approach suited Stanton’s style.

Frazier was the final slugger to advance to the second round, edging Carlos Gonzalez of the Rockies, 13-12, with his final homer coming nine seconds before the buzzer. [Stanton] hit most of his over 440.

What are the odds that Stanton parachutes into the Derby to dominate every year, whether he’s an All-Star or not?

Seeded third, Duvall had the advantage of hitting second and knowing he only had to surpass Myers’ 10 home runs. Some zipped low, missiles that parked in the first row. Some arched majestically and landed somewhere in the outer reaches of the ballpark. And when he got exhausted of pelting the batters’ eye in centerfield, or the row of seats beneath the scoreboard in left, Stanton twice left the ballpark altogether.

Bumgarner said he’d be interested to participate in a future derby if he’s permitted. “Now I’ll have kids saying the same thing, they watched me do this. I would like to return that”. Or a short night, actually.

After going through an epic slump that lasted for the better part of two months, Stanton has finally seemed to find his swing again. “I chewed tobacco from 2007 until the day he passed away”.

Baltimore’s Mark Trumbo topped Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager 16-15.

In the semifinal matchup of power heavyweights, Stanton defeated Trumbo 17-14.

Players can earn a 30-second bonus round in each round for hitting at least two home runs of 440 feet or longer.

“I didn’t hit 15 or 20 homers in the first half”, he said. You say, ‘oh, man, I didn’t know that was coming out.’ It’s like a guy from that movie 300, just walking in, it’s like, “That’s the guy we have to take down or we’re in trouble.’ I couldn’t take him down and that’s what happens a lot of the time”. “There are really no repercussions that come from this game other than just having fun and competing”. Stanton’s power is prodigious, and he flexed his muscles tonight in San Diego.

Sale said he gave up smokeless tobacco when Gwynn died of salivary gland cancer in June 2014 at age 54.

“I would like to add something about Tony Gwynn, as well”, the American League’s starter interjected from the dais.

“Haven’t touched it since”, Sale said. “I’m glad that everybody got to see it and enjoy it”. “Hopefully I can sway somebody in the right direction, as he did for me”.
