Long divided: Baton Rouge race relations under new scrutiny

Protesters blocked a road in front of the Baton Rouge Police Department when cops from agencies around the region moved to clear the way.

The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office says that 50 people were arrested during Sunday’s protests.

A second defining image of the turmoil was taken on Thursday night in Dallas, after five police officers were killed by a sniper in that city.

The Advocate confirmed that Mckesson is in police custody, and police said 120 people were arrested during protests Saturday night, though there is no word on potential charges.

Rashad Turner, leader of Black Lives Matter St. Paul and one of the protest organizers, told WCCO-TV on Sunday he was very disturbed by the throwing of rocks and bottles at officers, which he attributed to outside agitators from nearby streets, not the protesters on the freeway. He also said the vast majority of protesters had acted lawfully and nonviolently.

Giuliani, a Republican, continued his criticism of the Black Lives Matter movement on Monday, saying in a television interview that the group is “inherently racist” and “divides” America.

Shaun King, senior justice reporter at the New York Daily News, shared the image on Facebook with the caption: “POWERFUL photo from Baton Rouge”. “The officers wanted to push the protesters and viewers further back and she found that unjust – given that it was a peaceful protest”. Tensions were high during the encounter with the police and protestors.

Some outlets are reporting that the woman in the photo is Ieshia L. Evans, a 35-year-old mother of one, whose name appeared on arrest records over the weekend. “They were ignored”, said Baton Rouge Police Sgt. Don Coppola.

During a short morning press conference, Moore said he had frequently worked with the parents of Blane Salamoni, the officer who shot Sterling, both of whom have also served as police officers with the Baton Rouge Police Department.
