Amazon offers thousands of deals for Prime Day, forcing retailers to compete

In a short announcement on its e-commerce site, Toys “R” Us couldn’t resist poking a little fun at Amazon’s Prime Day promotion, which requires Prime membership. Amazon charges $99 a year for its Prime membership. On average, customers ordered 398 items per second, according to the company.

While many consumers were frustrated and others had a good laugh at the “super weird” products for sale, shares of Amazon have surged since 2015’s Prime Day when the stock was trading in the mid-$400s level. Wal-Mart’s website and mobile app sales were up 7% in the most recent quarter, as compared to 17% during the same quarter of the a year ago.

The Limited, Sears, Bealls, Banana Republic, Express, the Gap and Old Navy are all offering big discounts in the week before Prime day, says Offers.com.

Prime day has three types of deals. “From tomorrow (July 5) Prime members will be able to get 40% off a Finlux 43″ ultra-high definittion 4K Freeview Play Smart TV.

Unlike Amazon’s promotional event which is open to Prime members, Walmart’s will run for five days, is open to everyone, and will feature free shipping on all orders regardless of a user’s cart haul.

eBay was gunning for Amazon when it updated its homepage to read, “Exclusively For Everyone – Always Free Shipping”.

Wal-Mart launched competing deals during last year’s Prime Day, but this year the discounts are even deeper.

From July 11 through July 15, Walmart is offering a five-day period of free shipping with a selection of discounts.

When is Amazon Prime Day 2016? Its tag reads: “Deals for all”.

The free ShippingPass trial offer is still in place, but this new offer takes things a step further. The company also said it got hundreds of thousands of new Prime signups.
