Expect to see more animated GIFs as a result of the change.

In the meantime, we can only assume that the move is because GIFs are incredibly popular.
“Whenever you’re composing a tweet or direct message, you can search and browse the GIF library”.
“You can search by keyword, or browse categories of different reactions like Happy Dance, Mic Drop, or YOLO”. According to Twitter’s Help Center, the company has increased the maximum GIF size to 15MB on the web, a much-needed change from the original 5MB limit. Now this option is available for the web version and the mobile limit stays at 5MB.
For instance, GIFs are the best when you have to show a movie clipping or a amusing animation with your friend; small in size and serves the objective as well.
If that won’t be a problem, however, you can expect more high quality GIFs to make their way onto your Twitter feed soon.
Last month, Twitter expanded its video limit from 30 to 140 seconds, in order to be more competitive against major contenders like Youtube, Snapchat or Facebook.
