The Outlander Finale Gave Everything We could have Asked For

Young Ian is by far my favorite character besides Claire and Jamie.

FINALLY! Brianna and Roger were properly introduced in the July 9 season 2 finale of ‘Outlander, ‘ and it was everything we’ve ever wanted and more. These two are straight panicking about the Battle of Culloden, so they do what anyone would: plot the murder of Prince Charles. However, viewers who are seeing the episode afresh will be blown away. They separated tearfully as Jamie sent her back through the stones at Craigh na Dun just before the Battle of Culloden.

“Outlander” Season 2 ended with a gem of an episode, bringing to climax a glorious journey. In the promo, Claire and Jamie (Sam Heughan) are seen contemplating a hard and ultimately bittersweet separation. After so much time invested in trying to avert Culloden, it seems necessary to show more of it than was given screentime here.

It was a massive sacrifice for Jamie to choose to say goodbye to Claire in “Dragonfly in Amber”, knowing that he would need to charge into battle and nearly assuredly die there.

Episode 13, which was named after Diana Gabaldon’s 1992 book in which the series was based after, will flash forward to 1968. “She’s the offspring of two characters that you know and love so well, and we were looking to find an actress who has characteristics of both The King of Men and also our lead protagonist, Claire, who is ballsy and amusing and smart”, she said. Claire stayed married to Frank for two decades.

Along with Brianna, the series reintroduces a grown Roger Wakefield (Richard Rankin), last seen as the child being raised by the reverend in the season premiere. Brianna angrily denies her mother’s allegations, but Roger is very interested in Claire’s story. “Definitely in the finale, there’s a storyline that was not in the book, but it’s around one of the characters that’s in the book”, he added. But what exactly will she – and the viewer – find there? He tells her he is a McKenzie and asks her “How did you do it?”

The water shoots of “Outlander” Season 3 will be “challenging”, according to Moore. And without creating a more well-rounded character you’re never going to buy that she’s still thinking about [Frank]. Oh, PS: Roger Wakefield is actually a MacKenzie and Geillis and Dougal’s illegitimate child is his ancestor.

Gentle spoilers ahead about Outlander’s third-season premise and production.

While still at odds, Claire and Brianna – along with Roger the mediator – must work together when they come across a certain Gillian Edgars, a dead-ringer for Claire’s friend from the 18th Century, Geillis Duncan, who of course is another time-displaced modern woman who traveled to the past.

“Outlander” fans, what do you think was the most heartbreaking scene in the season two finale? Though some moments dipped into camp and some of the various plotlines were short-changed, “Dragonfly in Amber” was a solid success simply because it was able to turn around this ship and not only deliver something that felt very new but also build a solid foundation for the previously-announced Seasons 3 and 4.
