About 300 residents in Roosevelt and nearby communities were told to evacuate Wednesday as the fire – pushed along by wind gusts hitting 30 miles per hour – moved toward the town.

Active fires are burning in grass and sagebrush in several steep canyons, said Ron Fryer, a fire information officer with the Southeast Washington Incident Management Team.
A mandatory evacuation order was issued for Roosevelt, obliging hundreds of people to flee. And the Red Cross has set up a shelter. With fire crews focussed on saving residents’ homes, some vehicles left behind fell victim to the flames.
The evacuation order is expected to affect 25 homes, county officials said.
Traffic is being detoured around a section of State Route 14 that has been closed by the fire.
