This issue has cropped up at a time when the world’s largest carmaker is already struggling with the recalls of the Takata scandal. The campaign has been started on June 29 all across the country and is a part of the global recall campaign of 1.43 million vehicles for defective airbags.

A second recall, also announced Wednesday, involves 2.87 million Toyota vehicles sold globally, and concerns cars’ evaporative fuel emissions control unit.
In recent years, major Japanese automakers have been forced to recalls millions of vehicles over various other defects.
Toyota and Lexus are set to recall 72,885 Prius, Auris and CT200h models in the UK.
Almost half of the cars, made between 2008 and 2012, are said to have faulty passenger and driver airbags.
No injuries have been reported in relation to the defects as of yet.
The recall covers Toyota Corolla/Auris, Prius, Prius PHV, SAI and Lexus CT200h, HS 205h models manufactured between 2006 and 2015.
Dealers of Toyota and Lexus “will install retention brackets on the curtain shield air bag inflators at no cost”.
The Japanese auto maker is also recalling another 2.87 million vehicles globally for faulty fuel emissions controls.
The faulty air bags are not related to recent massive recalls of Takata air bags that have ballooned to millions of vehicles and affected almost all major automakers.
As Bloomberg notes, when the vehicles have a full tank of gas, leaks could appear because of the potential issue described above.
As well as this, some airbag inflators in the driver and passenger side roof rails could have a crack in a weld, causing it to separate when it operates.

Owners of recalled vehicles will be identified through registration data and contacted by Toyota New Zealand.
