At last, Bernie Sanders endorses Hillary Clinton

Sanders beat Clinton in New Hampshire by a 22-point margin in February.

Sanders waged a tougher-than-expected year-long battle against Clinton, but she clinched enough delegates to secure the nomination in early June. “That’s what democracy is about”, Sanders said. Will Sanders head out on the campaign trail to rally Democrats around Clinton?

The two Democrats told the crowd that even though they disagree on some issues, they stand united in bringing the country together during troubled times that culminated with five police officers being shot and killed last week in Dallas.

Five weeks after Clinton clinched the Democratic presidential nomination, Sanders is scheduled to join her at a rally created to put their bitter primary campaign behind them and emphasize a shared commitment to beating Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, in the November 8 election.

While Clinton took only a few days to endorse Obama after the primaries in 2008, Sanders has held out for the past month, seeking to influence the party’s platform and future.

Chants of “Bernie” broke out in the gymnasium while opening speakers addressed the crowd, prompting Clinton’s faithful to chant, “Unity”.

At a rally in New Hampshire on Tuesday, the pair will appear together to discuss a shared “commitment to building an America that is stronger together and an economy that works for everyone, not just those at the top”, according to statements released Monday by both campaigns. “Bernie’s a nice man and everything, but he’s not presidential”, said Ann Mason, a Clinton supporter. He drew upon the support of college students, independents and white voters drawn to his anti-establishment message. Many of his supporters have shifted to Clinton but the senator hopes to rally them as a way of preventing Trump from reaching the White House. He then said that he plans to do everything he can to make sure that Hillary Clinton is the next president of the United States.

“I am somewhat surprised that Bernie Sanders was not true to himself and his supporters”, Trump posted. Sanders, said Trump in a tweet, has “totally sold out to Crooked Hillary Clinton”.

“The candidate who wants less war is endorsing the candidate who launched wars in Iraq and Libya and would lead us to a new war in Syria”.

One clear example of that is the process to draft the Democratic Party platform, where the two sides met for almost a month and agreed on a draft version in which issues such as education, healthcare and the federal minimum wage were brought closer to Sanders’ positions. “We are stronger together”.
