Sorting Through What Supreme Court Abortion Ruling Means For NC
Reverberations from the U.S. Supreme Court’s major ruling backingabortion rights were felt on Tuesday as the justices rejected bids by MS and Wisconsin to revive restrictions on abortion doctors matching those struck down in Texas on Monday. Local opponents of abortion agreed.

Now Planned Parenthood will be working with other state’s legislatures to repeal similar laws.
But Fowler said “few states enforce laws once one state’s law is struck down because they realize they would lose if they got sued, but legally our law was not ‘ruled unconstitutional per se'”.
Missouri Planned Parenthood officials applauded the Supreme Court’s decision but said it’s unclear whether additional legal action will be necessary to try to invalidate state laws. “With more to come”, Krasnoff added. She didn’t break down specific laws the organization will first target.
The effects of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn House Bill 2, a Texas law that restricted abortion access, are already being felt around the nation.
The Texas law at stake in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt required abortion clinics “to meet the standards for ambulatory surgical centers” and providers to be able to admit patients to nearby hospitals, The New York Times reported. The Texas law being challenged in the case would have closed most of the abortion clinics in the state.
That lie was that the laws were created to protect the lives of Texas women, when the laws were really meant to do one thing: stop women from getting abortions.
Texas had argued that its 2013 law and subsequent regulations were needed to protect women’s health, an argument advanced by Tennessee lawmakers on two state laws here.
“These regulations resulted in the closing of clinics in areas outside major metropolitan areas, making it extremely hard, if not impossible, for women in a large part of Texas to access affordable reproductive healthcare”, she said. Planned Parenthood’s Kansas City office is in Overland Park.
Pastor Robert Jeffress criticized the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down Texas’ abortion rules as all about profit and not women’s safety.
While the Supreme Court rejected the measure, it recognized the importance of the matter and encouraged further debate in the coming months. At least three states have introduced bills to end the procedure. The regulations are now being reconsidered by the state board of health.
The Columbia clinic shut down late past year, because its doctor was refused admitting privileges at the University of Missouri’s Hospital.
CBC Radio-Canada reports the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador issued a decision Tuesday blocking pro-lifers from protesting within 40 meters (about 131 feet) of the Athena Health Clinic abortion facility in St. John’s, Canada.
Soon after the ruling was announced, Texas-style laws were nullified in Mississippi, Wisconsin and Alabama.
North Carolina does have other abortion restrictions, like a 72-hour waiting period and a requirement for doctors to submit ultrasounds to the state for abortions after the 16th week of pregnancy.
