Amazon Glitches Sour Prime Day

During last year’s event, the company reported that customers purchased 34.4 million items – more than any other Black Friday in the company’s history to that point.

Even though it set sales records with 398 items ordered per second, last year’s Prime Day was not without its detractors: no sizzle, all fizzle, with lackluster selection, hard-to-find deals and limited inventory, claimed those dissatisfied with the much-hyped event.

TVs are a hot item on Prime Day, and Amazon said it will stock almost twice as many TVs than on Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined in the U.S.

It’s the newest celebratory occasion in the realm of made-up holidays that actually manage to drive billions in commerce – Amazon Prime Day.

Wal-Mart announced that all this week, until Friday, it is offering free shipping on all online orders with no minimum purchase and no membership required. Gap Inc, Macy’s Inc, Target Corp and others marketed midsummer sales as well. “It looks like Amazon has spread out the deals more”, says Scot Wingo, ChannelAdvisor executive chairman.

Amazon Prime Day has been mentioned 68,000 times online today, according to data from BrandWatch, with the #PrimeDayFail hashtag being used more than 600 times.

Some customers grumbled a year ago about the sale’s inventory levels as deals sold out fast. However, the company has also put up a tag on its website reading “Prime Savings”.
